It kinda boggled my mind a little. Even this sleek glass high-rise, opened only in 1985, knew a time when people roamed its halls freely puffing away, when the smoke of a thousand Camels and Kools stained the tasteful granite and blonde wood of its lobby. We’re not talking about some relic of the Mad Men era here. This place has a food court, for crying out loud.

I’ve also been spending more time than usual on airplanes lately. Sure enough, every single one has a little ashtray built into the bathroom door, usually just below the sign warning that anyone who disables the lavatory smoke detector faces time in Federal lockup.

In time, of course, all of these public ashtrays will become as rare as a brass spittoon in a tavern, or the coal chutes that still stood in the basements of older St. Louis houses during my childhood. So I’m starting a campaign, right here in this blog post, to document these relics of a bygone era.

Across this country, untold numbers of abandoned ashtrays stand on duty in public places where nobody would dream of lighting up a cigarette today. Where once they were the focus of attention all day long, today they wait forlornly for scorched butts they’ll never receive. If you see one – in a movie theater, in a hospital, on a bus – take a picture and post it in the thread below. They did a dirty job for a long time, only to fall victim to changing fashions. It only seems right that we should remember.

In a way, though, you could also say the joke’s on your friends, because even though they’ve got a chance to buy today’s Roku media player and pass you in this little keeping-up-with-the-Jonses home entertainment arms race you’ve got going on, it’s still going to cost them an extra Hamilton. That XR feature don’t come for free.

We admit, it’s kind of a confusing situation. But there’s definitely a joke, and it’s definitely on one of you. As to exactly what the joke is, though, and on specifically whom—well, you’ll have to work that out between yourselves. With acts like “Squonk Opera” on the bill, we weren’t terribly worried about catching all the music acts. We mainly stuck to the comedy stages and the vendor tents, where the REAL action was. A man handed me a flier for medical marijuana and asked, “Do you have a qualifying condition?”

“No, but I’m hoping to get one soon,” I joked.

“Well I’ll get you a doctor who will find one.” I wasn’t sure if he was promising to help me score a dime bag or threatening me. We moved on.

And avoided these people like the plague.

It’s amazing the types of wares people come crawling out of the woodwork to sell at these types of things. We saw everything from strange rainbow-clad women offering “HAIR BODY PAINT:”

“Wait. Are you painting body hair or painting WITH body hair? I’ve changed my mind either way.”

…to 1200-thread-count sheets to socks designed to pimp your nerd cred.
 

Ironically, the “kosher” socks were made of pork.

There was even a sports bar set up, which makes absolutely no sense unless you’re the type of idiot to pay for a concert ticket and then sit inside watching sports the whole time.
 

“Sure wish someone would turn that music down.”

Some vendors knew the demographic better than others.

We even saw what I could only assume was the most poorly-thought-out name in the history of fair food:

“Can I get one wrapped in 2-ply to go? “

Speaking of poor marketing decisions, whoever designed this children’s ride probably never figured out why it failed so abysmally.

But now it’s starting to seem like an old friend from college who just won’t go away. “Sorry about the divorce, Tron lightcycle sculpture, guess you can use the guest room for another day. Yes, as a matter of fact, I do remember that time we spit a whole keg between us, and thanks for telling that story in front of my kids.”

Here’s the new logo for a game that seems to be called “U7″. Bet that’ll be fun, right?

So we couldn’t fault the guy for deciding to hit a few other booths first. We trusted Gatzby when he said he’d check back again later. Besides, there’s always something to see at PAX.

Wham! Dick! Deadline made, level up. Also serious players should unlock Steve Engelhart mode for the ultimate challenge.
