As I arrived at Seattle’s Columbia Center for work today, I noticed something bizarre built into the wall next to the elevators on my floor: an ashtray.

That dark streak down the middle is me. No, Mom, I wasn’t smoking.

It kinda boggled my mind a little. Even this sleek glass high-rise, opened only in 1985, knew a time when people roamed its halls freely puffing away, when the smoke of a thousand Camels and Kools stained the tasteful granite and blonde wood of its lobby. We’re not talking about some relic of the Mad Men era here. This place has a food court, for crying out loud.

I’ve also been spending more time than usual on airplanes lately. Sure enough, every single one has a little ashtray built into the bathroom door, usually just below the sign warning that anyone who disables the lavatory smoke detector faces time in Federal lockup.

In time, of course, all of these public ashtrays will become as rare as a brass spittoon in a tavern, or the coal chutes that still stood in the basements of older St. Louis houses during my childhood. So I’m starting a campaign, right here in this blog post, to document these relics of a bygone era.

Across this country, untold numbers of abandoned ashtrays stand on duty in public places where nobody would dream of lighting up a cigarette today. Where once they were the focus of attention all day long, today they wait forlornly for scorched butts they’ll never receive. If you see one – in a movie theater, in a hospital, on a bus – take a picture and post it in the thread below. They did a dirty job for a long time, only to fall victim to changing fashions. It only seems right that we should remember.

Beaucoup Roku

Move over, last month’s model—now there’s something media

If you bought the Roku model we sold on August 16th, you’re probably just now beginning to understand the degree to which it’s going to improve your life.

You’re probably parked in front of your television, watching all your favorite movies and television shows from Netflix and Amazon and whencever else quality programming is streamed. You’re probably smirking with smug satisfaction about how much cheaper and easier it was to plug-and-play with your Roku than it would have been to figure out how to set up a media center PC and hook it up to your TV.

You’re probably lording this nifty little gizmo over all your friends, telling them how great it is, and how stupid they were to pass on it three weeks ago, and how they’ll never have another chance to grab one at such a good price.

Or you would be, anyway—if you weren’t glued to the sofa watching your way through thirteen hour-long episodes of Carl Sagan’s COSMOS and thirty-two installments of PETER GUNN.

Well, the joke’s on you! Because if you had only waited until today, you could have bought the slightly better XR model! It’s got all the features your Roku box has, plus greater range. That’s what the “XR” stands for, see: “Extended Range.” (Apparently Roku’s engineers learned programming in the extra time they had on their hands after dropping out of their grade school spelling bees in the first round.)

In a way, though, you could also say the joke’s on your friends, because even though they’ve got a chance to buy today’s Roku media player and pass you in this little keeping-up-with-the-Jonses home entertainment arms race you’ve got going on, it’s still going to cost them an extra Hamilton. That XR feature don’t come for free.

We admit, it’s kind of a confusing situation. But there’s definitely a joke, and it’s definitely on one of you. As to exactly what the joke is, though, and on specifically whom—well, you’ll have to work that out between yourselves. Maybe sometime when you’re not preoccupied with your Ten Years of LAW & ORDER SVU Streaming Marathon.

So, like, December.

Ever since we Woot Writers got to Seattle people have encouraged us to take advantage of the bountiful resources at our disposal: we’ve eaten freshly-thrown fish at Pike Place market, we’ve been to that room we can’t print the name of here at The Copper Gate, and we’ve clucked our tongues and shaken our heads disapprovingly at all the idiots on those Duck tours. There was one Seattle tradition we had yet to experience, though, so last Saturday I headed out to the 40th annual Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival with little more than a camera, our WootLive Twitter account, my loving wife, and a deep-seated disdain for hipsters…

Just to be clear, moshing at Bumbershoot is not allowed. That being said, it will happen and if you do it, you do it at your own risk and it’s not their fault if you get hurt. But don’t do it. Got it? Good.

With acts like “Squonk Opera” on the bill, we weren’t terribly worried about catching all the music acts. We mainly stuck to the comedy stages and the vendor tents, where the REAL action was. A man handed me a flier for medical marijuana and asked, “Do you have a qualifying condition?”

“No, but I’m hoping to get one soon,” I joked.

“Well I’ll get you a doctor who will find one.” I wasn’t sure if he was promising to help me score a dime bag or threatening me. We moved on.

And avoided these people like the plague.

It’s amazing the types of wares people come crawling out of the woodwork to sell at these types of things. We saw everything from strange rainbow-clad women offering “HAIR BODY PAINT:”

“Wait. Are you painting body hair or painting WITH body hair? I’ve changed my mind either way.”

…to 1200-thread-count sheets to socks designed to pimp your nerd cred.

Ironically, the “kosher” socks were made of pork.

There was even a sports bar set up, which makes absolutely no sense unless you’re the type of idiot to pay for a concert ticket and then sit inside watching sports the whole time.

“Sure wish someone would turn that music down.”

Some vendors knew the demographic better than others.

We even saw what I could only assume was the most poorly-thought-out name in the history of fair food:

“Can I get one wrapped in 2-ply to go? “

Speaking of poor marketing decisions, whoever designed this children’s ride probably never figured out why it failed so abysmally.

“ANOTHER day with no customers?!”

Ditto for this one, which seemed to blend the thrill of a centrifuge with the challenge of, uh, pole vaulting? I guess?

“Well to be honest we’re not sure what it does, either. But hop on!”

Of course no festival experience is complete without good people watching. Bumbershoot had everything: furries…

Why would they need to wear shorts?

Guys in funny hats offering free hugs…

Story of my life, pal.

and of course, dancing hippies:

Think you had a better time at Bumbershoot? Got a better festival you think we should cover? Let us know in the comments!

Forums emperor Gatzby took time away from unjustly censoring your comments and took some photos for us. Part One was yesterday, and we hope that, after the jump, you’ll be joining us for Part Two.

But waiting for DNF is so 20th Century, right? So Gatz decided to go check the other booths again. Really, who could blame him for leaving? Especially when other booths had stuff like this:

A year ago, this Tron lightcycle sculpture seemed like an awfully cool statement from a studio willing to commit. But now it’s starting to seem like an old friend from college who just won’t go away. “Sorry about the divorce, Tron lightcycle sculpture, guess you can use the guest room for another day. Yes, as a matter of fact, I do remember that time we spit a whole keg between us, and thanks for telling that story in front of my kids.”

Here’s the new logo for a game that seems to be called “U7″. Bet that’ll be fun, right?

lol ob1 meat u @ u7 booth asap k

Of course, by this time Gatzby was getting nervous. It was late afternoon, and he still didn’t have any Duke Nukem details. He certainly couldn’t return to HQ empty handed. But, the booth! The booth was still nuts!

All those people, and none of them were moving. Gatzby knew that if he wanted to get in there, he’d need some serious help. He’d need a team of very special people to get that exclusive. Thankfully, any nerd-heavy convention is always chock full of special.

Someone call heaven, because an angel’s missing! And last time that happened it was because Lucifer was leading a rebellion. If that’s started up again we really should be made aware.

With his team now assembled, Gatzby swiped a time machine and zipped back to 1955, well before before the expo even existed. What a great plan, right? Surely, if there wasn’t any PAX, there’d be no chance of there being any li-

Aw, CRAP! Well, that’s what happens when you try to outsmart a bunch of people used to using video game logic on everything. However the time-shift did allow for present-Gatzby to now already be in line when past-Gatzby arrived at PAX to write yesterday’s post, so the Gatzs just did what all those paradox-fearing gamers could never do, and gave himself cuts! While Security fought to close the unholy rip in time, Gatzby ran and got this, the very very first screenshot from Duke Nukem Forever. Are you ready? Are you ready?

Come one, come all, to a peaceful gathering of tolerance.

And flames.

My fellow patriots I come to you today with a heavy heart. A heavy heart heaving with grief, for today I have become an unwitting participant in the war on terror and ladies and gentlemen, I found myself on the wrong side. You see I was using my refurbished HP Pavilion Elite Quad Core Desktop with 1TB and Blu-ray to search for all the evil hidden agendas corrupting and rotting America (the greatest country in the history of the world, God bless us all) from the inside out, when suddenly I realized I had stumbled across a Barack Obama “fan” page.

Soiled with a socialist agenda, I was now aiding and abetting terrorists. Who knows what al Qaeda websites this computer could’ve located with its amazing 3GHz AMD Phenom II 945 quad-core processor? My Blu-ray player would just as easily play a Taliban Training DVD. And sure, the 1TB SATA hard drive would store just about any file. Including TERRORIST files.

The solution was as obvious to me as it is simple: I had to burn my desktop.

And so now, this Saturday at the Community Fair Grounds, I’m inviting you too! Bring your desktops, be they HP Pavilion Elite Quad Core or some other inferior computer, and burn them! Burn them all! It’s the only way to show those oppressive, education-hating, backwards terrorists that freedom, REAL American freedom will never be affected by their ways! We’ll never resort to the foolish, short-sighted bigotry we all KNOW they suffer from!

We’ll burn our computers before they can burn anything that might matter to us! And in doing so we’ll obviously win their hearts and minds to our cause! USA! USA! USA!

What did you do this weekend? If you’re like us, it was many different things. Some of us were out of town, some of us enjoyed a quiet weekend with the wife, one of us even Tweeted at Bumbershoot. And guess what? One of us went to PAX!

Forums overdog Gatzby went out and took us a few pictures of the Penny Arcade Expo. Only he didn’t take any notes, so we’ve been forced to re-create his journey in our imagination. Join us, won’t you? After the jump, you’ll be seeing part one of this extravagant two day adventure. Remember, if you don’t love it, he’ll probate you for life!

PAX is the place where the creme-de-la-creme of video gaming go to discover… well, whatever’s coming next. So it should be no surprise at all that PAX was the place where the big news broke.

In case you slept all weekend, let us be the first to tell you: Duke Nukem Forever has been announced! Sure, that first happened a decade ago, but this time they swear it’s for real. Our industry connections told us the big day was coming, so we made Gatzby swear to get us some exclusive DNF details. Only… wow, what a line, right? So we couldn’t fault the guy for deciding to hit a few other booths first. We trusted Gatzby when he said he’d check back again later. Besides, there’s always something to see at PAX.

Check out this dude playing Homeless Guy In A Park Fights The Invisible Elves. Go ahead, laugh all you want. They laughed at Guitar Hero too, and look how much money that made.

Here you’re getting a first look at the latest comic-based adventure game, Deadline At 70s Marvel. In this game, the player takes the role of heroes like Steve Gerber and Jim Starlin, rushing in after a full night at the bars and finding the book must be ready by three. “Hey,” says Jim, “maybe Cap should fight three mad scientists evolved from traffic cones?” “Right on!” says Steve. “But can we Work in a dig at Nixon?” Pow! Wham! Dick! Deadline made, level up. Also serious players should unlock Steve Engelhart mode for the ultimate challenge.

From far away, Gatzby thought he’d found the greatest Pez dispenser in history! Then he got a little closer and saw this:

Eh, so what, still not too bad. Plus it led to a chance meeting that helped Gatzby finally do something he’d always wanted to do.

THERE HE IS! THERE HE IS! Gatzby’s cries of joy filled the convention center. Maybe this meant his luck was changing! Maybe this time he’d…

…or not. But hey, it was early in the Expo. The crowd was bound to thin out. And Gatzby had promised us an exclusive. No matter the cost, he wasn’t leaving empty-handed.

Gatzby’s visit to PAX continues tomorrow with more photos and… dare you hope for special Duke Nukem Forever images? We guess Duke Nukem fans will believe anything at this point. So be here tomorrow, and maybe you’ll get some!

Behold! The power cosmic is mine!

But can a mere mortal be trusted… with UNIVERSAL POWER?!

Lo, Gina, do not come closer! Even now unimaginable power courses through my very being and I fear I may not contain it! My body… changing! The very perceptions of space and time I once knew as unalterable fact are now mere suggestions in the face of this new force! We were fools to play god with this Philips 6-Device Universal Remote Control 2 Pack, Gina!

“Oh Jim I warned you! What use would a man have for two universal remotes?! It’s not natural!”

Dammit Gina this is no time for “I told you so!” I must find a way to harness this incredible energy!

“But for what end, Jim?!”

Why for the world, of course! Think of a future in which your DVR, DVD player, CD player, satellite, cable, and TV all function with the same remote control! My god, it’s even adapting.

“What do you mean, ‘adapting,’ Jim?!”

It’s… it’s LEARNING the functions I use that it didn’t originally have. It’s changing me… us!

“Jim I don’t like it one bit! Put those remotes down now! These are things humans weren’t meant to hold!”

No, Gina. I don’t think I’ll put them down. In fact, I don’t think I’ll EVER put them down!

“Jim, what are you saying?! JIM?! NOOOOOO!”

ZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPP!

Yeeeeesssssss…

“Bagless”? We Prefer The Term “Bag-More”

I’m the Eureka Comfort Clean, and I’m here to tell you that you can lead a full, active lifestyle whether you have a bag or not.

Every day, thousands of bag-free Americans just like me do all of the same things that everyone else does. We play racquetball. We give our kids piggyback rides. We enjoy satisfying love lives – seriously, I could show you some home videos that would pop your eyes right out of your skull. We snowboard.

And most of all, we get carpets cleaner than you’ve ever seen in your life. The doctors say our bodies compensate for our lack of bags by developing whirlwind cyclonic technology. This extraordinary adaptation lets us maintain suction power far longer than a traditional vacuum.

Why does everyone always snicker when I say that? Baglessness is no laughing matter, people.

My point is, don’t look at us as handicapped or disabled or neutered. Look at us as ordinary citizens just like you, with all the same feelings and abilities and dreams, who happen to have a HEPA filter that captures 99.97% of dust and allergens. The days of hiding our baglessness in the shadows are over. Bag-free Americans will be your friends and clean your floors, but we refuse to hide in your closets.

Unless that’s just where you keep your vacuum cleaner. That’s OK, I guess.

It’s Not Stealing When They Do It

Even the very best “beat the system” plan is going to need a little hardware.

Richard Branson, the billionaire, started out smuggling records into England. By the time he was arrested in 1971, he was rich enough to afford the fine. Now he’s got a knighthood and an airline. THIS COULD BE YOU!

But don’t think it’s easy to become a white-collar criminal. You need to be brave, clever, sneaky, and also have that initial startup capital. Like, if you were going to exploit the spirit of fair use by releasing a movie as hundreds of ten second clips (each sold separately) you’d want to first buy a JVC Everio HD Camcorder.

The JVC Everio HD Camcorder is very portable, meaning you can sneak it in places where one would normally not expect a camera to be. It’s also got an LED video light built right in, so dark places can be well lit. Use that 20x optical zoom and the Konica Minolta HD lens to make a 1920 x 1080 Full HD recording, and save all those ten second clips to a SD/SDHC Memory Card (not included) in one of the two card slots and pow! You’re ready to go!

If Branson can make an empire out of selling cut-outs from the back of his car, surely YOU can make millions using a JVC Everio HD Camcorder to collect the very latest fair-use blockbusters. Even better: what about releasing just the good parts? Imagine an hour-long collection of ten second clips with nothing but the explosions and the sex scenes. Hey, if Hollywood doesn’t care about a logical plot, why should you? Just be sure to charge a small “assembly fee” to cover the cost of your JVC Everio HD Camcorder and put a little bit aside each day.

After all, if you can cover the fine, you’re no longer a pirate. You’re a maverick businessman!
